Blog Post No. 51: Judith Shakespeare Goes to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2023
After several years of well received staged readings at both The Players Club and The National Arts Club in New York City, Judith Shakespeare is making her first appearance in a full production. “Upstart! Shakespeare’s Rebel Daughter Judith,” as cast and directed by Alexandra Spencer-Jones, and produced by Maddy Mutch Productions, will appear from August 2 to Aug. 27, 2023, with the exception of August 15, at 12:10, at The Gilded Balloon Theatre, Edinburgh, Scotland. For an hour and twenty minutes the audience will see and hear a story about Shakespeare, his wife, his younger daughter Judith, with the Dark Lady thrown into the mix as well. The story is fictional but based upon research, as the playwright explores what Shakespeare and his family circle might have been like. Judith’s story is foremost, as her life illustrates how women of that time coped with the expectations of society—even the expectations of a father who was a man of the world.
